McALLEN (The Monitor) – Unable to cope with the struggling economy, California-based Mervyns and New Jersey–based Linens 'n Things have filed for bankruptcy and are now closing all of their stores nationwide.
Mervyns announced Friday that it would close its 149 remaining stores after the holiday season, including the three Valley locations in Harlingen, Brownsville and McAllen. Before filing for bankruptcy, the retailer had 175 stores in seven states.
Linens 'n Things declared bankruptcy in May. Earlier this month, a U.S. bankruptcy court judge gave the retailer permission to shut its 371 remaining stores, 41 of which are in Texas. Before bankruptcy, Linens 'n Things consisted of 589 stores. |
